Descendants of Martin P. HOUSTON
1. Martin P.2 HOUSTON (John1) was born Abt. 1809 in North Carolina, and died Abt. 18451. He married Eliza Drucilla GARRETT in Probably Tennessee. She was born Bet. 1810 - 1815 in North Carolina, and died Aft. 1860. Notes for Martin P. HOUSTON: 10/04/1998 1830 Madison County, TN census: In 1830 Martin Houston lived in Madison County, TN, and according to the census he was between 20 & 30, his wife was between 15 & 20, and he had one child, a daughter under 5, who must have later died in infancy, as she was not on the 1840 census. 1840 Madison County, TN census: In 1840 Martin Houston was still in Madison County and he lists his age as between 30 & 40, his wife's age as between 20 & 30 and there were two males between 5 & 10, one under 5, and one female under 5. He lists his occupation as agriculture. Most likely he was a sharecropper. In a search of the deed records for Madison County there is no record that Martin P. Houston ever owned land. But there is a deed in 1840 where Louisa HOUSTON et al sold land. Interesting. In 1850 census the whole family, except for Martin, who was probably deceased, had moved to Henderson County, the next county over. See notes under Eliza. 12/05/1998 Per Robert Taylor at the Jackson-Madison County Library, Tennessee Room, Martin P. HOUSTON did not have a will made in any Tennessee County. Because there are no records of Henderson County, we do not know if they moved to Henderson County before he died or the family moved after he died. More About Martin P. HOUSTON: Census 1: 1830, Madison County, TN Census 2: 1840, Madison County, TN Occupation: 1840, Agriculture2 Notes for Eliza Drucilla GARRETT: 10/04/1998 1850 Census for Henderson County, enumerated on 10 September, 1850, 2nd district, house #78: Eliza WALLS (who lists her age as 32!) has the 7 living children with her and from this census we learn all of their names. Only Mary J. (age 13) and Theophilus (age 9) were listed as attending school, and her oldest son, Henry W. Houston's occupation was listed as farmer. From this information we can deduct that in a short period of time, 1845 - 1850, Martin had died, Eliza had probably married a Mr. WALLS, and had moved to Henderson County, and Mr. WALLS was no longer living. See note under date 12/05/1998 regarding records from Henderson County. We believe that she moved her family in near Martin's half-brother Wilson HOUSTON in District #3, Henderson County. She was in District #2, but they were enumerated 3 days apart in September, 1850. From Madison County, Tennessee Marriages, 1838-1871: Louisa Walls married Charles H. Nelson on 10/14/1856. 1860 Census for Madison County: Head of household - Eliza (enumerated as Louisa) NELSON was listed with her age as 45, and Charleston Houston (enumerated as Charlton) age 22, Mary Jane Houston (enumerated as Jane) age 23, Theophilus Houston age 20, John Houston age 18, and James Houston age 16 were all still living with her. In addition her son Robert WALLS age 10 was listed. Eliza was obviously pregnant with Robert at the time of the 1850 census, which gives us a death date for her husband, Mr. WALLS of about 1850. Her third husband, Charles H. NELSON, whom she married in 1856 was enumerated separately, with his own 4 children. 12/05/1998 Henderson County Courthouse and its records were destroyed by two fires in 1862 and 1893, and research is difficult, but there has been some attempt through newspaper files to create some of the early records. 01/09/2000 In searching the early deeds for Madison County, I found a very interesting deed transfer: Louisa Houston (et. al.) and Sarah C. Houston (et. al.) sold on 08/19/1840 333 acres. This deed was recorded on 12/07/1842 in book 8, page 433. Must check this out. 07/27/2000 In researching the census records for 1840 for Madison County, , pg. 75: Martin Houston, his wife Elisa (Louisa) with 3 boys and 1 girl. Living 4 doors away was Osley Garrett who was 39 years old (from his 1850 census - Gibson County) and he was born in NC. Here are all the Garretts in Madison County at that census: Pg: 75 - Martin P HOUSTON - 120001-10001 (He is 30-40, she is 20-30) Pg: 75 - Osley GARRETT - 110001-10001 (He has moved to Gibson County by 1850) Pg: 73 - William GARRETT - 00001000001-0000000001 (He 80-90, she 70-80) Pg: 109 - Alfred D. GARRETT - 100011-10010001 (He is still in Madison County in 1850 where he lists his age as 42 and born in TN) Pg: 105 - David J. GARRETT - 10001-00011 (He is still in Madison County in 1850 where he lists his age as 34 and born in TN) Pg: 87 - Jacob GARRETT - 110001-11001 (Jacob is still in Madison County in the 1850 Census - he is from VA) Pg: 74 - Jordan GARRETT - 000001-000001 (Not in TN in the 1850 Census) Pg: 84 - Keneth GARRETT - 000001-0 (Not in TN in the 1850 Census) Also in Henderson County in 1840: Pg: 342 - Nicholas GARRETT - 0221001-3011001 (He is not in Tennessee in 1850) 07/27/2000 If I am right, at least her last son was born in Alabama. James M. Houston, in future censuses states that he was born in Alabama. Why did she sell the land in 1840? James was born in 1845? Was she in Alabama then? It is curious that there were no Walls in Madison County, but plenty in Alabama. This is beginning to look like the family moved to Alabama for a while from about 1840-1845. There were three children born during this period but only James history has surfaced. Theopholius most likely died during the Civil War and John is not yet researched.

JORDAN: 10/16/1998 On her grave marker in Wheatland Cemetery, Dallas, Texas, it gives her birth date as August 26, 1838, which would make her 5 years younger than Henry and only 14 1/2 years of age when they married. 11/07/2000 Their common grave marker has her middle initial as M. She is listed as Mary M. Houston. Why? On the 1850 census for Madison County (Pg. 663, family #601) she is 12 years old and her name is Mary A. Jordan. On the 1860 census for Rusk County (House @1404, dated August 7, 1860) she is listed as M. A. Houston, age 22 with her husband H. W. Houston, and children M. S. (age 5) from TN, S. I. (age 3), from Ark., and A.S. (age 9/12) from Texas. In the article published in "History of Dallas County" she is listed as"... Mary A. Jordan, a native of Tennessee..." More About Mary A. Most likely he was killed during that time.

John HOUSTON, born Abt. 1843 in Madison Co, TN16. Notes for John HOUSTON: 01/08/2000 In checking the Confederate Records of Tennessee, there was only one John Houston that could have been our John. He was John W. Houston, Private B Company, Detailed Conscript. From Roger L. Curry (rictic@aeneas.net) who authored a web cite for Civil War Information: I have no specific information on Company B - detailed conscript other than the following information from memory: Madison Co. and nearby Jackson, TN., was an Union encampment and Union Supply base. The residents had Confederate sympathy and hoped for relief from Confederate forces out of Corinth and Missouri but it never happened. The conscript service began in July of 1863 and Mar., July and Dec. of 1864 for the Union. It began first by the Confederacy when it was approved in 1862 but not strongly enacted until 1864. The CSA called men into action between the ages of 18-35 and then later revised 17-50. It is interesting to note, conscripts accounted for 25 percent of the CSA east of the Mississippi. Many conscripts were good fighting men, accepting their responsibility and their destiny. A detailed conscript was probably a soldier, drafted into the service and sent to an area, supply base or similar location to perform military duty. Most did not want to serve and when drafted, some could pay a bounty (North) for others to take their place. Many simply did not report (South) and were chased by conscription hunters. Many states fought against the draft on both sides and it caused rioting in New York. More About John HOUSTON: Census: 1860, Henderson County, TN 10 ix. James M. HOUSTON I, born February 1845 in Alabama17. He married Mary Lou TOMLIN February 16, 1870 in Madison County, Tennessee18; born September 1852 in Madison County, TN. Notes for James M. HOUSTON I: 02/16/1999 James M. Houston bought land in Madison county on 12/09/1874 and 01/01/1875. 01/06/2000 In looking at the census records for St. Louis, MO, there was a James M. Houston living there in 1880. He lists his birth state as Alabama and his wife's name was Mary L. Houston, age 29, born in Tennessee. They have 3 children: Mary Lou, age 8, born in TN, Vic (daughter) age 6, born in TN, and a son James M. Jr., age 1, born in Missouri. This leaves us to believe that this is the James M. Houston's mother Louisa (Elisa) had moved to Alabama for a short period of time, about 1840-1849. In the 1900 census he lists his age as 55, born in 1845 in Alabama, his wife Mary was born in Sept. 1852, and they have a daughter, Elvira Houston, age 22, born April, 78 in Tennessee, a daughter Mary H. Witherspoon, born Jan 1876, age 24, in Tennessee, and a son-in-law William C. Witherspoon, born Sept 1872, age 27, in Mississippi. The conclusion from these records is that this is our James M. Houston but we must figure out how he was born in Alabama. Is is possible that Louisa Houston and Sarah C. Houston et al left Madison County in 1840 and moved for a while to Alabama where James M. Houston was born? More About James M.
