(2 Generations)

Generation No. 1

1. Zachariah1 JORDAN was born Abt. 1785 in SC or GA, and died Bef. 1830 in Bedford County, TN. He married Tabitha STOKES 1807 in Athens, Clarke County, GA, daughter of George STOKES and Susannah McALPIN. She was born 1790 in Clarke County, Georgia, and died October 15, 1875 in Henderson County, TN.

Notes for Zachariah JORDAN:

03/08/1999

From the book "Cemetery Records of Bedford County, Tennessee" by Helen Crawford Marsh:

"Marsh Cemetery - In 1975, all markers were standing and graves intact. Later after the sub-division of this farm once owned by the Jordan and Marsh families, events were set into motion that has resulted in the demise of this graveyard. Little is left of the original today. A Memorial Marker has been placed by descendants in the churchyard at New Bethel Baptist Church nearby, which was built on part of the Marsh land, once owned by Michael and Elizabeth (Landing) Marsh, natives of Hertford and Gates Counties, North Carolina. Members of the Zachariah Jordan family are buried in this graveyard in graves once marked by native field stones."

We believe this is where Jachariah Jordan is buried.

Notes for Martha URSERY/ESSARY:

09/16/1998

I do not believe her last name was Useny as stated on Henry and Mary (Jordan) Houston's biography. She was Mary's mother. In searching the Social Security Database of deaths there has never been a Useny, therefore I believe her name was mistyped or no spelling was ever known. Most likely her name was Essary, Ussery, Ursery, or some variation of that spelling.

There were Essary, Ursery and Usery people living in Madison County at that time.

Notes for Mary A. JORDAN:

10/16/1998

On her grave marker in Wheatland Cemetery, Dallas, Texas, it gives her birth date as August 26, 1838, which would make her 5 years younger than Henry and only 14 1/2 years of age when they married.

11/07/2000

Their common grave marker has her middle initial as M. She is listed as Mary M. Houston. Why?

On the 1850 census for Madison County (Pg. 663, family #601) she is 12 years old and her name is Mary A. Jordan.

On the 1860 census for Rusk County (House @1404, dated August 7, 1860) she is listed as M. A. Houston, age 22 with her husband H. W. Houston, and children M. S. (age 5) from TN, S. I. (age 3), from Ark., and A.S. (age 9/12) from Texas.

In the article published in "History of Dallas County" she is listed as"... Mary A. Jordan, a native of Tennessee..."

Notes for Ethorn/Ephriam S. JORDAN:

from: dig4kin@aol.com 1/28/2000:

No, I don't know much about Jackson Jordan. I have been corresponding with a descendant of Ephraim's and she sent me a copy of a letter that was written by a lady named Pat Marks. I guess Pat Marks is also descended from Ephraim, but Julie doesn't know her either or even know if she is still living. Julie has sent a letter to her in hopes she can find out more.

Sandra

Here is the letter: The comments in parenthesis were inserted by Julie.

Dated February 26, 1982

". . . so next week I'll get back to the family tree. Was wondering if you have ever heard that Granpa Jordan's mother's maiden name was Urusery. Have heard from two people that was her maiden name. Trying to find if it is true. That was Aunt Ivy Jordan's married name. Have you ever heard of Bunk Jordan, Wash Jordan, Sid Jordan or Mealy Jordan. Someone wrote and told me they are Josh Jordan's children. Josh Jordan was Grandpa Ephram's brother [Do you have any record of a Josh Jordan as a son of Zachariah R. and Sarah?]. He also had a brother by the name of Needham. Have you heard of them. Also a Jack Jordan [Andrew Jackson?] whose hair was white on one side and black on the other [funky!]. Fate and Delores Jordan [who?], they have a daughter by the name of Vila Mae and a son. Don't know his name. Who is Aunt Dovie Adams? Is she Grandpa Ephram's sister? Estus Williams [daughter of Robert Elihu Jordan - Robert E.B. Jordan (b. Feb. 1876) in your records] gave me the information.

Do

you know if Grandpa Ephram had a brother by the name of Jack [Hasn't she

already

made mention of Jack?]? Estus said that Grandpa Ephram's middle name was

"Scroug" or "Scraug". Estus said in her letter that she visited a Needham

Jordan in Jackson, Tennessee in 1923 or 1922. She said Needham was about her

fathers age at the time [Robert Elihu Jordan was born in Feb. 1876]. Have you

heard of a Meedie or Meadie Jordan? I would like to have pictures of your

grandpa and grandma for the book. Do you have any old pictures of Grandma and

Grandpa Ephram Jordan? If you do would you get a copy for us. I sent Cleeta

[no idea who this is] some negatives I had athat were in Mom's things. Her

friend is going to develop them for us. I'll get a copy, Cleeta will get a

copy

and a copy for the book. Wrote to Mrs. Tony Booth [don't know who this is

either] in Paris. Haven't heard from her yet. Wrote to Mrs. Walker Devlin in

Deport, Texas. She wrote back, she gave me the address of the lady in Paris,

Texas (Mrs. Booth) also a picture of Grandpa & Grandma's Jordan's grave.

Grandpa [Ephram] 1846 -1931 and Grandma [Betty] 1848 - 1925. . . ."

"I Remember"

By H. J. Bolen

Henderson County Times

January 28, 1981

I wish to write an account of my memories of one of the earlier communities of Henderson County, Tenn. By the early 1840’s Farmville, in the northern section of the county, was well settled by some of the country’s finest people. Among the early settlers, we find such names as the Owens, the Mossers, the Jordans, the Morgans, the Dabbs, the Cozarts, the Walkers, the Cullivers, and others. A Mr. Terry Weaver operated a general store, and the Mr. Culliver, above, operated a large mercantile establishment. A saloon, or grocery, as they were then called, were operated by Therrell Brothers, Eph Jordan, and J. I. Hester.

Census 1: October 03, 1850, Henderson County, TN

Census 2: 1860, Henderson County, TN

Occupation: 1850, Farmer

Notes for Winnie N. (Jordan):

02/25/1999

Winnie is not listed in the 1860 Henderson County census.

Children of Ethorn/Ephriam JORDAN and Winnie (Jordan) are:

50 i. Zachariah T.3 JORDAN, born Abt. 1846.

51 ii. James W. JORDAN, born Abt. 1848.

52 iii. Amanda J. JORDAN, born February 26, 1852 in Henderson County, TN17; died April 11, 1924 in Huron, Henderson County, Tennessee18. She married HOLMES.

53 iv. Tabitha E. JORDAN, born Abt. 1851.

9. William J.2 JORDAN (Zachariah1) was born Abt. 1825 in Tennessee. He married Amanda (Jordan). She was born Abt. 1840 in Tennessee.

More About William J. JORDAN:

Census: 1860, Henderson County, TN

Children of William JORDAN and Amanda (Jordan) are:

54 i. Nancy J.3 JORDAN, born Abt. 1855 in Henderson County, TN.

Notes for Nancy J. JORDAN:

55 ii. Ethron S. JORDAN, born Abt. 1859 in Henderson County, TN.

Notes for Ethron S. JORDAN:

02/24/1999

On the 1860 Henderson County Census Amada Jordan, Nancy J. Jordan and E. S. Jordan, Jr. were all enumerated with William Jordan. We asssume that Amanda is his wife as she has more children by him by the 1870 census. On major discrepancy is that E. S. is listed as Jr. in 1860 and as Ethron in 1870. E. S. Sr. had lost his wife about the time Ethron S. was born. Just need to keep this as an open item.

56 iii. Lutisha JORDAN, born Abt. 1861 in Henderson County, TN.

57 iv. William R. JORDAN, born Abt. 1866 in Henderson County, TN.
