Descendants of Burgess MULLINS
Generation No. 1
1. Burgess2 MULLINS (Bud1) was born Abt. 1799 in South Carolina1. He married (1) Patience (Mullins)2 Bef. 1830. She was born Abt. 1801 in South Carolina. He married (2) Rebecca (Robins) BARTON Bef. 1858 in Alabama, daughter of Moses BARTON. She was born June 1815 in South Carolina3. Notes for Burgess MULLINS: 11/28/1998 Burgess was located in Walker County, Alabama 1850 census, District 12, pg. #319, family #270. His wife's name was listed as Patience, and Burgess was listed as a farmer. Also listed next as family #271 was Buddy E. Mullins (20), his son, farmer, born in SC, and living with him was Mary (L?) age 16, born in AL, and William W. (age unk), born in AL.
01/28/1998 In the 1834 State Census, Cobb County, GA, Burgis Mullins is listed with 8 whites. The other people listed in that same county were Buda Mullins, 3 whites, John D. Mullins, 2 whites, and Ausburn Mullins, 9 whites. 02/16/2001 From Mary Scott on the Internet: ______ 2e. Burgess Mullins born about 1799 in SC. In the 1830 Greenville County, SC federal census there is a Burgess Mullins enumerated in the Greenville District. It is thought by Burgess Mullins descendants that this is our Burgess. There was a Burgis/Burgois Mullins enumerated in Cobb County, GA in the 1834 state census. He was located in Walker County, GA in the 1850 federal census, district 12, page 319, family 270. He was listed as a farmer. Also listed next as family 271 was Buddy E. Mullins age 20, farmer, born in SC and living with "in' was Mary (L?) age 16 born in AL and William W. born AL, age unknown. In 1860, in the Walker County, AL federal census there is a Burgess Mullens. According to Burgess Mullins descendant, Jean Gibbons, this is our Burgess. According to Jean Gibbons, there was a child born to Burgess and Rebecca Barton Robbins in 1858. Rebecca Barton Robbins was the daughter of Moses Barton from SC and had been married to John Robbins. The Moses Robbins of the 1860 census was a child from that marriage. The 1850 census shows her with husband and other children In the 1870 Falls County, TX federal census there is a listing for a Brutus Mullins age 70, occupation farm labor, born in SC. Listed with him are Rebecca Mullins age 55, keeping house, born TN; Sacramento/Samantha age 12, attending school, born AL; and Sam Mullins age 37, occupation farm labor, born GA. If Burgess was born in 1799, the age is about right. Rebecca, in the 1860 Walker County, AL census was 46, born in TN. Sam in 1850 was 15, born GA. If Samantha was born in 1858, then this fits for our Burgess. Children of Burgess Mullins and Patience ? Mullins are: 3a. Nancy Mullins born in 1830 in GA. 3b. Samuel R. Mullins born in 1835 in GA. 3c. William T. Mullins born in 1837 in GA. 3d. Franklin Mullins born in 1838 in GA. 3e. Ester F. Mullins born in 1838 in GA. 3f. James B. Mullins born in 1840 in GA. 3g. Catherine Mullins born 1841 in GA. 3h. Josephine Mullins born in 1843 in GA. 3i. JohnMullins born about 1845 inGA. 3j. Lafayette Mullins born about 1847 in GA. Child of Burgess Mullins and Rebecca Barton Robbins Mullins: 3k. Samantha Mullins born in 1858 in AL.

She found Burgess and Rebecca's child, Samantha Pocahontas in the 1900 Census for Limestone Co., TX (Justice Precinct 3, Enumeration District 56, HH# 55). Samantha was born in June, 1859, but she gives her age as 40 as of June 5, 1900. She lived with her husband, Haigh (weird, but it is pretty clear on the census record) Byrd, 52, farmer. They had seven children: William L., 24 (something not right here, because both Haigh and Samantha said they had been married 22 years. Samantha would have been 18 at her marriage; 16 at the birth of her son, William, if the census is right. I suspect that William must be 22, born in 1878 unless Byrd or somebody else fathered William then a couple of years later Byrd married Samantha); Winnie B., 19, b. Dec, 1880; Ida B., 16, b. Aug 1883; then twins, James and Malissa (remember Burgess had twins--boy and a girl also), 14, b. Nov 1885; George W., 7, b. Nov, 1892; and last, Robert C. 5, b. May, 1895. Samantha had seven children born to her and all were alive and living with her in 1900. Now here comes the interesting part. Living with Samantha is her mother, Rebecca Mullins, age 84, widowed. Rebecca was born June, 1815 (so she is going to be 85 that month after June 5, the date of the census). She had ten children, but only one survives (Samantha). Rebecca can not read or write (everybody else in the family can). Samantha indicates that her father, Burgess, was born in South Carolina so here is another bit of evidence backing up that fact.
