Clement Mullins
1750-1834
Clement Mullins, like his brother Malone, had a cousin with the same name. Great
care must be taken in documenting the genealogy of this family.
Clement was born about 1750 in Granville County, later Bute County, and then
named Franklin County, NC. The first mention that I have on Clement is that on
November 13, 1772 he and Thomas Mullins were ordered in Bute County Court
minutes to assist Thomas Cook, surveyor of the road from William Massey's road
to Cedar Creek and to supply hands for road repair.
During the Revolutionary War (1776) he was in Captain Goodloe's Company, and in
Colonel M. Long's Regiment. According to his recollection he served only 5
weeks. Later he was drafted into the militia but was able to hire a substitute
who served for him for 3 months. He then served 3 months himself as a substitute
for a Wells Millner. Clement was discharged at Salisbury, NC. His application
was eventually rejected because he did not serve the required 6 months.
He is also mentioned is several deed transfers in Bute county from 1774 to 1777.
On one of them he goes by the nickname "Clem". By 1783 he makes a
final deed transfer selling Henry Pope of Franklin County 100 acres on south
side of Wolf Pitt Creek. This deed was recorded on November 26, 1783. It was
around this time that he left for Georgia, as documented in his Revolutionary
War Pension Application #R7486. I believe his brother Malone and others went
with him to Georgia.
S. Clement Mullin received a land grant in 1787, with the records reflecting
that it was in the old huge Washington County, Georgia. All of the counties of
Georgia were very large at that time and Washington was next to Greene and I am
sure the boundary lines were not very clear. He received 350 acres. On this
property Clement first paid taxes in Greene County, Georgia in 1789. In 1793,
the southern portion of Greene county became Hancock County. He then began
paying taxes in Hancock County in 1794, 1796 and in 1804. He sold his property
in pieces: 1794 - 115 acres to John Barron, 1797 - 115 acres to James Phelps,
and finally in 1804 - 121 acres to James Cadenhead. From these deed records of
the time we learn that Clement and Malone had adjacent properties along Rocky
Creek, a tributary to the Oconee River.
In the 1805 Georgia Land Lottery, Clement had 2 draws, for land to be in the
newly acquired area of Baldwin County, and was evidently successful as in 1811
Thomas Mullins on Clement's behalf, paid taxes on 101.25 acres and 101.25 acres
on Glady Creek, now in Jones County.
By 1820 Clement, without his children had left Jones County, and was recorded as
living in Lawrence County, Mississippi. In 1820 his sons James and Hardy were
still in Jones County. In the year 1821, Clement moved to Copiah County,
Mississippi, where he lived with his youngest son William until he died in 1834.
