Federal Census - Paulding County, Georgia, 1860

By 1860, Thomas is the only MULLINS living in Paulding County.  He was recorded as being 69 years of age, living alone (no other whites), his occupation was a farmer, and he owned $250 worth of property and $1,250 worth of persons (slaves).  In addition, he told the census take that he could read and write, but earlier documentation shows that he signed back in 1846 that he signed his name with and “X”.

In addition, a separate census, called the 1860 Slave Analysis, was taken.  In the analysis, Thomas owned two slaves, the same two who had been with his father for quite some time: Sarah, age 65, and Alfred, age 30.

Thomas dies sometime between the 1860 census record taken on July 21, 1860, and his estate sale in November 1861.  Thomas, at the time of his death, owned land in Paulding Co., Lot 1042-2-3, which translates to District 2, Section 3.   There is a good chance that this is the land that ex-slave Alfred MULLINS was living on in 1870.  Alfred has real estate (Brownsville P.O) valued at $200.  Alfred, 43, has married Hannah, who is 36.  Living with them is Henry MULLINS, white, age 17.
