Jeremiah Mullins

1748-1837

If my assumptions (dangerous) are correct Jeremiah Mullins is the son of Thomas and Anne (Malone) Mullins. He was born in 1748 in Granville, later Franklin County, North Carolina.

By 1794 Jeremiah has moved to Georgia where he began paying taxes in 1794 in Hancock County.

In 1802 we find Jeremiah in Hancock County, Georgia Tax List where he owns 92.5 acres on Island Creek. Also on this Tax List are his relatives Green Mullins, Clemm Mullins (121 acres on Oconee River), Nat Mullins (64 acres on the Oconee, Malone Mullins (220 acres on Island Creek). From this information we must deduct that Jeremiah and his family followed his brothers to Georgia.

Jeremiah signed up for the 1805 Georgia Land Lottery receiving 2 draws. He also signed up with the 1807 Land Lottery, and if we have the right Jeremiah his son Jeremiah did also. We do not have a record of his son at this time. We do know that his son Pleasant J. Mullins was involved later in his father's estate. It could be possible that the J. in Pleasant J. stood for Jeremiah. Also in that lottery were Malone Mullins and Nathaniel Mullins.

A Jeremiah Mullins, Sr., and Jeremiah Mullins, Jr. were living in Hancock County, Smith's District and were drawn in the 1807 lottery, Jeremiah Sr. received land in Wilkinson County, District No. 19, and Jr. received land in District No. 13. We do not know if this is the same Jeremiah, because we do not have a Junior in our records. On February 5, 1808 a Jeremiah Mullins bought from James Murfey 202.5 acres, Lot #174 of the 9th District of Baldwin (now Jones) County. On the 1811 tax list for Jones County he is only taxed on 55 acres on Walnut Creek.

On February 1, 1817, Jeremiah sells Hardy Mullins of Jones County 50 acres of Lot #45 located on Camp Creek in the 8th District of Jones (formerly Baldwin) County. Hardy Mullins is the son of Clement Mullins, who will leave in 1821 to join his father in Copiah County, Mississippi.

On September 8 1817, Jeremiah sells to William Munk of Jones County 50 acres of Lot #46 on Camp Creek in the same area as the sale above. Four days later Hardy Mullins sells his acres that he bought earlier in the year to the same William Monk.

Then on September 15, 1817, Jeremiah Mullins buys from Daniel Wadsworth of Jones County, 70 acres on Ocmulgee River in Lot #190 of the 11th District of Jones (formerly Baldwin) County. Guess he wanted to move.

On September 7, 1819, two years later, he gave to his daughter Syrenah - slaves. Recorded in Book L, pg 65. This might be a wedding gift, because on January 2, 1820 she married Dennis Lester, who was the brother of David Lester, the first public school superintendent of Jones County. David had married Elizabeth Mullins, Serenah's older sister.

In 1821 Jeremiah sold some land in Hancock County to Charles Abercrombie, part of Lot #190.

On September 13, 1836, Jeremiah Mullins writes his will, naming all of his sons and daughters with their married names. He also mentions his deceased daughters Syrenah Lester, and Clary Ann Herrington. Jeremiah signs with a mark. He was literate, but he still only signed with an (x). The will was proved on February 6, 1837.

On September 3, 1837 his son Pleasant J. Mullins and son-in-law David Lester were granted permission by the court to sell the land of Jeremiah Mullins' estate after having given proper notice. They sold the land to Thomas Hogan for $2500, and after 2 years of payments they granted deed to 530 acres of land on Potato Creek in the 9th District of Jones County.
