Matthew Sparks II in South Carolina

A year or two after Matthew’s father died, he and his family moved to Spartanburg County, South Carolina.  Matthew, in his RWPA, stated it was Greenville County, but in fact, he lived on the border area, next to Spartanburg County, where he was enumerated in 1800.  Spartanburg County had been formed in 1785 (Spartan County) as a county of Ninety Six District.  Like other counties, in 1800 it became known as a district, the term county was resumed until after the Civil War in 1868.  Matthew and his family only lived in South Carolina for 7-8 years, according to his RWPA.  His best recollection is that he left there around 1801, and moved back to Jackson County, Georgia.
