Nathaniel Mullins
1753-1840
Dr. George Mullins of Logan, West Virginia assumes that Nathaniel Mullins was
the son of Thomas because, among other things, he witnessed the will of John
Mullins, Thomas' son. He, as well as James Burgess, believe that the Nathaniel
Mullins living near Jeremiah Mullins in the Hillsborough District of Randolph
County, NC in 1790 as the son of Thomas Mullins. I disagree. That is the same
Nathaniel Mullins who lived in Rowan County in 1790, and he is the one believed
by most to have moved to Logan County, Virginia (now West Virginia). Nathaniel
Mullins of Rowan County married there in 1807, and his eventual trade was
blacksmith, which would confuse many a researcher because of the ties with the
other Mullins family who were also blacksmiths. In any case the rest of his life
has been well documented by James Burgess and others. His genealogy is not
included in this record.
By 1802 Nathaniel Mullins, his wife, and the remainder of his family are with
his brothers Jeremiah, Clement and Malone living in Hancock County. He owns 64
acres on the Oconee River. He participates with his brothers in both the 1805,
and 1807 Georgia land lotteries, but unfortunately there is no record of him
receiving any free land. He is still on the 1811 tax list but his property is
not listed.
In about 1818, Nathaniel and Clement and their wives head for Mississippi, where in 1820 they
are enumerated as living in Lawrence County, newly formed just 6 years earlier.
Neither of them are traveling with their children. Nathaniel's oldest son
Jeremiah did move to Mississippi for about 8 years (1820 - 1828) and then moved
back to Georgia, eventually settling in Harris County on the Alabama border.
Finally there was an article in The Columbus (Georgia) Enquirer of 22 July 1840:
"Died - Departed this life on the 8th July 1840, at my
residence 36 miles west of Columbus, Ga. on the stage road leading to
Montgomery, Alabama, Nathaniel Mullens on his way to Harris County Georgia,
from Miss., where he said he had a son living, near Whitesville, by the name
of Jeremiah. He said he was 86 years old last Christmas; he also said he had
two children who had lived in Miss. but had lately moved to Louisiana. I wrote
two letters to his son, Jeremiah, but have received no information from him,
he had in his possession a mule. I would be glad his son or some of his
relations would come and see about it." It was signed Joel Sistrunk.
I wonder if his son ever read the article, or found out what happened to him.
