Thomas II & Lucy Mullins

The other settler in the Wilkes County, Georgia, area that is most important to this research is Thomas MULLINS II.  There is a lot of evidence to indicate that this Thomas MULLINS came from Bute County, NC, and is the brother of Jeremiah, Clement, Nathaniel, Malone, and John MULLINS.  Because of the common name he carries, research is very difficult.  Thomas II left no will, but certain court documents indicate that he is the son of Thomas MULLINS I, and all of his brothers except John (who stayed in NC) came to Georgia.  His wife was named Lucy, and their children are, in the minimum:

  1. John MULLINS

  2. Elias MULLINS

  3. (son) MULLINS

  4. Thomas MULLINS III

The other clue to Thomas’ heritage is that in 1793 he deeds all of his blacksmith tools to his son Elias.  Witnessing the deed is Clement MULLINS, his brother.  Back in Bute County, NC, his suspected father, as well as his brothers Nathaniel and John MULLINS were blacksmiths.

Little is known of Bud’s life in Georgia during that period presumed to be about 1784-1791.  He was taxed (#100) in 1787 in Wilkes County, and he was included with Thomas MULLINS II (#88), mentioned above.  Also taxed with Bud were Elias MULLINS (#99) and John MULLINS (#89), presumed to be the sons of Thomas II.  All of these MULLINS were taxed in District Q, Capt. John Freeman’s District, which was located near the center of the county, near present day Tignall, Wilkes County, Georgia.

It has been assumed that Bud probably married there in Wilkes County, as his first daughter Rebecca was presumably born about 1789.  I do feel that he met, if not before now, Matthew Jefferson SPARKS II, son of Matthew SPARKS I, as Matthew II was living on land in Wilkes County that was owned by his father who resided back in Franklin County.  It is recorded that Matthew II moved to South Carolina about 1794, according to his own RWPA.  If Thomas, Bud’s oldest son, was born about 1791 in South Carolina, then Bud had already moved to South Carolina.
