Agotchu:
(A-got-chew) Red flowering plant whose
seeds, when ground into a powder and thrown on a fire cause it to be smokeless.
Found mostly in the rainforests of the Southern Weald
Ahlie:
(Awl-lee) The mythical flower found only around murkey pools
of standing water deep within Kyrrell Swamp. White, so thin as to be transparent in daylight. Visible
only in the early morning when covered with dew.
Ahllie:
(Awl-lee) Named for the Ahlie flower of the Southern
Weald. She would become a Fletcher like her father, and extremely good with a bow. She is very fast
on her feet. Ahllie is a spiritualist, helper, and excellent in dark sight, a wondrous tracker.
She learned quarrels from her mother. Lobot Cord. Father is Gilrrie, Mother is Jalleli, of
the Rirchet Cord.
Akreish: (Ak-rysh
) Large mammal with a long body covered by a
thick white-skinned pelt. Commonly found in rivers and streams of the northern Corrin Mountains.
The pelts have value as currency in the City-States.
Amock: (
Ah-muk) Anglich word for black ore dug out of the
Corrin Mountains above Hummel that is used to make weapons of extreme sharpness. See wammac.
Anglich:
(An-glitch) The oral
and written language of Uppsala. Used as the court language in most of the City-States of
Erde. Taught verbally to the peoples of the Weald by Uppsala's Pedagogues.
Back ta the Weald:
The final journey of the Vigroth dead. To go back to the Weald simply means to die. It is
the end of Circle in that the body decomposes. Other Weald creatures from animals and birds to
worms to the plants of the Weald themselves, feed off it. In death, life continues.
Bagcap:
A beret style cap worn by peasant women in Uppsala used to cover their hair to keep it managed
while they worked. It could be a crocheted mesh or full material.
Batsu:
(Bat-sue) Falcon-like bird of prey. Seen mostly in the central regions
of the Corrin Mountains.
Be With:
In Vigroth, comtoc. To BeWith is to be one. It is the relationship each Vigroth Cord member
has for the other. They are With. It is more than love, more than trust, more than oneness even. It
is the pinnicle of human relationship.
Bertenst:
Tall willowy branched broad leaf nut bearing trees found mostly in central and southern Erde and more
specifically near rivers and streams.
Biccata:
(Bic-caw-ta) Elder of Thelra. The village
leader. Gort Cord.
Billics:
(Bi-licks) Ahllie's Lobot Cord brother. Billics likes to sleep.
He always manages to acquire things the Cord needs. An excellent hunter and stalker, Billics plays
the woflute. He often enjoys teasing his Cord family. He is very knowledgeable concerning the
insect life of the Weald. He was named Billics because he burped a lot as a child.
Birthinshine:
(Birth-in-shine) A slang way of referring to the moon
of Quacnbocar or Birth's Gift.
Bonanwood:
(Bo-nan-wood) Tall, straight, thin-leafed trees that grow
profusely. Produces wood extremely resistant to warping. Fletchers prefer it for their arrows.
Bonan wood trees abound from above the river Gihon in the northern Weald to Kyrrell Swamp in the
deep South. Also an excellent building material
Bonding: Although
bonding could be referred to as the sexual act of the Vigroth Cordmates, it is much more than that.
Metaphysical in nature due to the oneness of their sharing and the abilities they learn in mastering
their physical bodies, bonding is an experience that transcends the act of simple human sexuality.
The bond can be completed between only two people, but it is usually experienced by the entire Cord as a whole.
The more people involved, the stronger the spiritual link of the bond and the greater the physical and
emotional climax of the participants. Only the Vigroth can partake in the bond and only within their own
Cord.
Booger: Slang word for a small
Vigroth child, male or female, aged from birth to 6 years old.
Branner Bush:
Broadleaf bush that grows to five feet in height with thick bluish-green leaves. Found in central and
southern part of the Weald.
Brawny Billet:
A sailor's Inn located in Selga where Uhirla worked as a bunk girl. A favorite haunt of Captain
Briggs.
Briggs: Captain and leader
of the specially trained Gatherer pack who destroyed Ahllies village. Ahllie tracked him back to
Uppsala and later onto the merchant ship Hollidae in Selga, which broke up in Rigga Sea and sank.
Captain of the Marie Celeste who, with his wife Sarah and their daughter sailed out of New
York City in November 15th, 1872 bound for the port of Gibraltar. The Marie
Celeste was found 20 miles off the Azores in December of the same year. The entire ships
company of 10 had vanished.
Brother Maker:
The Creator of Erde and the Universe. The God of the Vigroth people.
Bunk Girl:
Cheap prostitute or common whore. Often found chained to her bunk in a roadside inn,
bunk girls are usually paying off a debt of some kind as few would choose this lifestyle.
Chewin' Hair:
Slang expression for long conversations between Cord sisters Ahllie and Lockksie. Very deep
sharing.
Ciattie:
(See-ath-tee) Rirchet Cord sister of Jalleli and Gilrrie.
Circle: The very spiritual
and natural religion of the Vigroth people. In Circle, all things come from and are part of each other.
It is expressed in a cycle that sees each plant, each animal, each fish, insect, and bird, dependant
on death for life. Within Circle, men and women are just two more of the Maker's creations, subject to
the same physical and spiritual laws of the Universe as all other life.
Circle's Rhythm:
The Universal song, the rhythm of all life and death, the target of all attempts at focusing. Every
created living creature and non-living thing sings its own unique portion of this Universal song. When
played together these songs represent the harmony of the created Universe.
Cogin: (Co
-gin
) Massive trees with huge thick trunks and many branches. Taller and wider
than California red woods. Found mostly in the south central regions of the Weald
Coginna: (Co
-gin
-ah
) Ahllie's Lobot Cord brother. Tall and muscular at
65" - 320 lbs Coginna is strong yet very sensitive to the feelings of others. An excellent
builder and story teller, Coginna has learned some of the Planter's healing secrets. He is the best
wrestler in Thelra and is Monggasies best friend. He was named for the rugged and massive
cogin trees.
Colarathi:
(Cool-ar-rath-eye) Natural enemies of the Vigroth who
live in the south central part of the Weald. Extremely war-like and destructive.
Cord:
"A cord of three strands is not quickly broken." - Ecclesiastes. The Cord is the family
arrangement of the Vigroth. Basically, Cords contain approximately 8 people with the
gender mix of about 5 women to three men. These ones are committed (married) to each other from
birth, when the village elder listens to their heart and pronounces them to be in a
certain Cord. Children are never in the same Cords as their parents because ages of Cord
members are usually no more than four or five years different. Birth brothers or sisters from
the same Cord parents aren't in the same Cord. Although it's rare, brothers or sisters from different
Cord parents sometimes do end up in the same Cord. The Cords grow up together, learn together, and by age 8 or so
they live together for the rest of their lives in their own cordstead. They are a complete
unit and work together as a team. They become so close their speech tends to slur when
they talk to each other because they hear each others thoughts with their minds quicker
than sound of their voices travel. They become so empathic they feel each others pain and levels
of comfort and annoyance.
Cordmates:
Another phrase for Kindred. In one of their songs they define Cordmate as, "You are my sister,
You are my brother, You are my past, You are my future, You are my life, You are my soul."
Cordstead: A stead
which is home to an entire Vigroth Cord. Each Cordmate has residence there.
Corrin Mts.:
(Cor-rin) Spine of mostly unpassable Mountains running from
northeast to southwest through the central part of Erde.
Cracked the World:
The splitting of the original planet into Earth and Erde. The remaking from a paradise world inhabited
by spiritual beings to a two worlds inhabited by physical beings. The cracking of Erde as referred to
by the Vigroth is the same happening as recorded in the Bible where God cursed the ground (hence
cracking the world) and Adam and Eve were expelled from the Garden of Eden. Some of the cracked world
remained as the Earth, the rest became Erde. This is referred to in Ecclesiastes where it states,
"Consider what God has done: Who can straighten what he has made crooked?... God has made the
one as well as the other."
Crib Doll:
Show girls or Expensive prostitutes. Mostly found in upper-class taverns or private homes of important
individuals in the large city-states of the Outsiders. They are trained in their talent, usually
singing, dancing, playing an instrument, writing and reciting poetry, etc. They are also trained
in the art of sexually pleasing their owners.
Curse: A group of power
words that cause the fabric of the Universe to bend to the speaker's will causing distress to the person,
group or object upon which the curse is levied.
Dangerous:
The Vigroth consider women to be of dangerous spirit during the time of their monthly season
and allow no man to speak with or even be near a female then. For this reason, women sequester
themselves in the shakanu while they are dangerous. For the women it is a time to
relax from their normal hectic routine.
Death Gate:
In Uppsala, as in other large OutSider cities in Erde, condemned prisoners were taken from the jail in
an oxcart along the main street to the west gate of the city. It was called the Death Gate because prisoners
were crucified by nailing them to the city wall outside and just to the left of this gate.
DeepChat:
A form of spiritual communication between Vigroth Cord members. Learned as a child by placing
their hands on each other and peering into each other's eyes. Focus is maintained and deepened until
there is a connection within the souls. This communication is highly transparent. People in
DeepChat would know each other totally, having no secrets, hidden agendas, or unspoken thoughts. It
requires a tremendous amount of trust between the people involved.
Dicticia:
(Dic-tish-see-ah) A Riggrathi spiritual icon. It is a two
foot high plank which pictures a massive cogin tree with a malevolent eye staring at the goddess of
the nightshine through the tree's forked branches. The carved icon represents the Vigroth people
and their ability to be unseen in the jungles of the southern Weald. Before entering into Vigroth
territory, the Riggrathi set these carved icons in a circle and dance around them. At the height
of their dance, they kick out at the dicticia, knocking them over and stomping on them to signify
what will happen to any Vigroth they come across.
Dommout: (Dom-out
) Parsie's father. Kelsha Cord.
Donie:
(Don-ee) A young pregnant Vigroth girl.
Dorgs:
(Doorgs) Devils.
Used as an expletive.
Dvojnice:
(Dvaajh-naxs) Double whistle flute made from one block of wood.
Right tube has 4 or 5 holes, the left has 3 or 4 holes. When played, parallel holes are usually not
covered simultaneously resulting in 2 parts rather than unison. Both tubes, individually or together
can be overblown to produce tones one octave higher.
Ears: Small, fast
moving rabbit like creatures. Also referred to as fluff-tails.
Eeohh Monk:
(E
-O-Monk
) Large tree living nocturnal monkey of the southern Weald.
Their cry of eeeee-ooooohhh can be heard just before shinerise in the early morning.
Empty Chair: Represents
the ruler of Erdes place on the Council. The chair has been empty for more than 100
years since the disappearance of it's occupant. The High Council has ruled that since
there is doubt concerning his demise, the chair will remain empty until proof exists that
this ruler is deceased.
Erde: (Err-dah) A continental land mass about the size of Europe
and Asia.
Eyes of the Weald:
Local Vigroth militia. Keep constant watch for intruders.
Fappin:
(Fap-pin
) Similar game bird to a pheasant. Common to all parts of the Weald.
Fargthh:
(Far-goth) Demon Lord of the swamp snakes of Kyrrell Swamp.
Fargthh has the ability to speak with people and animals. It is believed he lives in a pool of water
near the Vigroth village of Pakanno inside the northern reaches of Kyrrell Swamp.
FireTale:
Stories and songs told around Vigroth ceremonial fires. Myths, legends and histories. Sometimes
also referred to as FireSongs.
Flaugin': The
Vigroth art of camouflage. Ability to make oneself or something almost unseen and
undetectable by sight or smell.
Fletcher: A person who
makes arrows or attaches the feathers to arrows.
Focus:
The key element in Vigroth natural magic. It is their will to survive which enhances their ability to
focus deeper. Focusing is the first lesson taught to Vigroth children and all other Vigroth abilities
depend upon it for success. They look upon the ability to focus as crucial to their existence.
Gatherers: A
special military force said to have been instituted by the occupant of the Empty Chair for
the purpose of recruiting slave labor groups among the tribal peoples of the Weald. Led by
Captain Benjamin Briggs, they hunt in packs of 50 under separate commanders broken into
two braces of 25 each. They use a trance inducing drug called stasha to keep control over
their captives.
Gauggan:
(Gaw-jan) Rirchet Cord sister of Jalleli and Gilrrie.
Ghost Sandbar:
Sandbars formed and dispersed by the movement of the currents in shallower waters near land. Not
charted on nautical maps because of their appearence and disappearance, they caused many shipwrecks during
the days of sailing vessels.
Gilrrie:
(Gill-ree) Ahllie's father. Rirchet Cord. Fletcher and head
of Thelras militia called the Eyes of the Forest. Very knowledgeable about the Weald,
Gilrrie taught Ahllie tracking, hunting, weaponry, camouflage and survival.
Gobbili:
(Go-bil-eye) A large white sea bird with long thin legs.
Southern Weald.
Go-find:
Booger game similar to Hide and Seek except only one child hides and the rest root him
out. Hiding child uses any and all means available to camouflage their presence.
Goddess of the Dark Night:
To the Riggrathi, she has the power to lighten the darkness enabling them to see the unseeable. They
make pleas, bargins and even sacrifices to her in order to gain her approval so she will lift the
darkeness of the night and enable them to see as if in dim light.
Goin' ta the Trees:
Vigroth slang expression for bonding.
Gold Mark:
The gold mark is the standard of value and the money of account in the Empire. It is a large
coin made of eight ounces of gold mixed with copper for strength. Equal to 100 silver marks, the
gold mark would be six months wages to a tradesman.
Gorget: (Gor
-jit
) The scarflike part of a headress covering the neck and shoulders.
Gort: Tusked,
pig-like mammal similar to a boar. The natives of the Weald domesticate these animals and
use them as guard animals.
Goushin:
(Goo-shin) Flower with pink petals, said
to give the wearer increased patience.
Goushtoka:
(Goo-schtow-ca) Patience seat which Vigroth
fathers are tied to while awaiting the birth of their children.
Great Teacher:
All of Nature. "But ask the animals, and they will teach you, or the birds of the air, and
they will tell you; or speak to the earth, and it will teach you, or let the fish of the sea
inform you." - Job 12
Greiker:
(Grr-eye-ker) Large stork-like bird of the southern Weald. It's
cry is a piercing shriek heard in the early morning.
Gutamar:
(Goot-ahm-are) Root of a common broadleaf weed found in
the south-central Weald.
Hira:
(Hee-ra) Vigroth for girl, daughter, female, woman. Often
used when referring to a female child before she receives her name.
Hollidae:
(Hol-a-day) Name of the merchant ship Briggs boarded and
Ahllie stowed away on that broke up during a storm in Rigga Sea.
Horns: Mammal
similar to our male white tailed deer.
Hummel:
(Hum-mall) Tucked into a mountainous territory where the
mighty Corrins settle into the blue depths of Rigga Sea, the town of Hummel is maintained as a
free trading port. Hummel is a commune of artisans, jobbers, and craftsmen still unhampered by the
direct governing hand of the Uppsalan Empire. Here, OutSiders and natives of the great Weald come together
to barter their goods in peace. Vessels of every description fill the harbor, tied to a maze of docks
spun like a colossal web athwart the shallow waters.
Humptydump:
(Hump-tee-dump) Describes the
sexual experience outside of the bond such as sex between animals or the OutSider
sexual experience.
Inquiry:
Poetic legal summation of a case at a jury trial in Uppsala.
Jalleli:
(Jawl-el-eye) Ahllie's mother.
Member of the Rirchet Cord. Jalleli assisted the Pedagogues. She taught Thelras young
between the their visits. Her mind and wit was sharp and quick. Well versed in the history of
Erde and its people, Jalleli was a primary source of information for the inhabitants of
Thelra and other surrounding villages. Ahllie gained her great love of
quarrels from her mother.
Jenanne:
Owner of the home in Uppsala off Totten and County near the docks where Ahllie stayed disguised
as Affran after Tarrilip's death. Ahllie referred her to Uhirla.
Jaarg: (Jarg) Owner of the
Brawny Billet, a sailor's inn located in Selga.
Jasim: (Jaz-im) Conifer type tree producing a glue-like sap
used by Gilrrie to cement feathers on to wood shafts. Common in the southern
Weald
Juist:
(Joyst)
The Vigroth word for spirit. Juist is the first creation of Brother Maker, the first female. She
was his helper in all that were created. She formed the Physical and Spiritual Laws upon which the
entire Universe depends for order. She is the creator of the Great Teacher or Nature.
Kajic Sap:
(Ka-jick) Sap from the kajic tree, a fir found throughout
the Weald. The sap from this tree is used by the Vigroth to help control the need to urinate. It is
rubbed on the lower abdomen from the belly-button to the beginning of the pubic area.
Kallam:
(Kal-um)
Hunter and Guardian of the North, Keeper of the Land of Heroes. One of the Spirit Fathers of
Vigroth beliefs. Kallam is Lord of the Plain of Illusion. The gift he granted to the Vigroth
was the use of the metal wammac.
Karne: (Carn
-ah
) Vigroth word for boy, son, man, or male. Often used when referring to
a male child before he receives his name.
Kariessie:
(Kar-iss-ee) Rirchet Cord sister of Jalleli
and Gilrrie. Lockksies Mother.
Keller:
Traveling Pedagogue from Uppsala who taught the Vigroth in Thelra. Worked closely with
Briggs as an undercover agent.
Keltel: (Kell
-tel
) The name of one of the guards on Death Row in Uppsala's city prison.
Kelsha:
(Kel-sha) Small and white with large gray spots and bright red eyes this mammal is
a night hunter in the north western part of the Weald.
Keryl: (Ker-eel) Hawk like bird of prey common to the north and central Weald and portions of the
northern regions of the south Weald.
Kindred:
Cord brothers and sisters who are bound in spirit, soul, body and mind. They
support each other emotionally, spiritually, physically and mentally. They know each other
so well they share a metaphysical connection.
Kirtle:
(Kur-tl) A tight sleeved, full
skirted floor length dress, fastened up the front and worn by most of the peasent women of
Uppsala.
Korjie: (Cor-gee) A large murky green parrot
like bird common to the southern Weald. It has a very skitterish nature and squawks
loudly when it feels it's in danger.
Kurtle Fruit:
(Cur-til Fruit) A large watermellon like fruit grown in the central
to south Weald. Kurtle fruit are tied to ropes and swung from hanging branches as practice targets
for Vigroth archers.
Kyrrell Swamp:
(Ki-ral) The large swampy
portion of southern Erde home to the ahlie flower, snakes and all kinds of birds, fish, and critters,
many which are very dangerous.
Land of Heroes:
The place to which the spirits of the Vigroth people go after death, awaiting to return to the
Weald once again when their Cords are called. Ruled by Kallam and reached through the use of nicroot, it is
accessable by the living.
Latzu: (Lot-zoo) A fermented alcoholic drink similar to beer common
throughout Erde. Outsiders learned to make it from the natives.
Lean: A
hunters blind built in or at the base of a tree.
Leathers:
Common hideskin garb of the Vigroth peoples.
Lisha: (Leh-sha) Crib Doll owned by Taylor. Lisha was in charge of
prepairing new Crib Dolls purchased from the slave market for life in Taylor's household.
Lobot: (Low-bot) A large wolf-like animal common to most of Erde.
Name of Ahllies Kindred Cord.
Lockksie:
(Lawk-see) Ahllies best friend
and Lobot Cord sister. Loves to deepchat. She is an expert at languages and dialects of the Weald
peoples. A bit unruly and plain featured, her hair is always in a mess. Lockksie keeps
the Lobot Cord schedule. She was named for her habit of chewing on her hair.
Locus:
(Low-cuss) Part outsider and part Rathhcerie who grew up
in Uppsala. Locus is a scout and spy for Briggs' Gatherers.
Lokish:
(Low-kish) Husked seed plant that grows some ten feet high.
Dried husks from this plant are often used to construct dolls and ceremonial masks.
Lord Defender:
Defense counsil in the Uppsalian court system.
Lord Malttrics:
(Mal-trics) Spirit Elder of all the Vigroth people. Proining
Cord.
Magic:
Outside the Vigroth world, any unexplainable instance may be referred to as magic. To the Vigroth,
however, the same unexplained instance would be a challenge to understand how the instance functions
within the framework of either Spiritual Law or Physical Law. The Vigroth do not fear that which they
do not understand.
Make it gone:
Cause it to disappear. Put something out of ones mind.
Marshall Jobe:
(Joe-bee) Lord Proctor of the Uppsala Rejoinder. Long established ruler of the city.
Head of Uppsala's armed forces.
Mary Celeste:
The brigantine owned and captained by Benjamine Spooner Briggs that sailed from New York on 7th
of November, 1872, bound for Genoa. On December the 5th she was found by the crew of the Dei Gratia
adrift and crewless in the Atlantic.
Mary Sarine:
The mother of Uhirla, a bunk girl from the Brawny Billet. Mary was an OutSider originally from
West Virginia.
Medicine Bags:
Medicine Bags are used by the forest dwellers of the great Weald. They come in many shapes and sizes
and are thought to have mistical powers when items that have special meaning to the wearer are placed
within the bag.
Melnnra:
(Mel-nra) Mother of Parrsie and Selggie. Kelsha Cord.
Mirjennie:
(Mehr-jen-nee) Virtuous
woman assisting Solloja. Member of the White-tale Cord.
Mirror: The
best friend of a kindred Vigroth. Game taught to boogers that teaches the ability to see
each others good and bad habits and to accept what others say about them without
experiencing bad feelings.
Misenx:
(Mize-nix) Common tree similar to Palm
trees. They are found in the southern Weald.
Monggasie:
(Mon-gau-see) Ahllies Lobot Cord sister.
Sensitive and emotional. At 6-2, 170 lbs, she is good at wrestling, excellent with the knife.
Artist with clay and color. Knows the bird life of the Weald by sight and sound. Her name
means big hands. She has very think arms, wrists and fingers. A gentle, sensitive pedagogue
and historian. Her mirror is Coginna.
Musk Rye:
Large clumsy short-legged mammal with long, curved claws. It's musk sacks give off a sharp
tacky stench. Found mostly in the southern Weald
Nag Katu:
(Nog Ca-too) Long tooth. Large saber-toothed cats. Corrin
Mountains.
Narrken:
(Nar-ken) Thelra's trader. Narrken schedules trips to Hummel and
selects other villiagers to accompany him on trading trips to Hummel.
Natchets:
(Nat-chets) Small blue speckled birds about the size of
a sparrow. They have an alliterating, chirping song. Common to most of Erde.
Natural:
In Vigroth, Velkrai. When Ahllie would describe the Cord relationship while in America, she soon
learned that people here put labels on the sexuality of others. People told her that she was bi-sexual
but Ahllie didn't see it that way since she and her Cordmates were mated for life from birth. She
thought about it and began answering questions about her sexuality by stating that she was Natural.
When questioned about it, she would reply, "Where I am from, our way is as natural as the rain that brings
life ta the Weald."
Nicroot: Hallucinogen
similar to peyote made from the long black roots of the nic plant. The roots travel just
under the surface of the ground and grow up to fifty or sixty feet in length. The plant has a tall stem
with small green leaves at its base and produces a vibrant blue long-petaled flower. Plentiful in
the southern Weald.
Ol' Grey:
Sammins, in his wolf form.
Onnoix:
(On-oy) Tarrilip's mother. Kelsha Cord.
OutSiders:
People non-indigenous to Erde. These ones appear in Erde at various times and places. They
never seem to age but are as susceptible to death by accident or killing as anyone else.
The offspring of such ones age as normally as people indigenous to the land.
Owatachhe:
(Ow-ah-tach-ee)
Guardian of the West. One of the Spirit Mothers of Vigroth beliefs. Owatachhe is Lord of the
Plain of Pure Thought. The gift she granted to the Vigroth was vocal communication and the DeepChat.
PackPuppies:
A slang term Ahllie often used in describing her Lobot Cord relationship while in America. She would
see a group of puppies playing or draped all over each other while sleeping and say, "See? Such was
Lobot Cord. Just a buncha packpuppies." She often applied the term to herself in a singular sense
as well, especially when meeting someone for the first time.
Pakanno:
(Pa-caan-oh) Vigroth village located in the central area of the
southern Weald just outside the beginnings of Kyrrell Swamp.
Parkels:
(Par-kals) Small bright yellow song birds similar to the
color and size of a canary. Central and southern Weald
Parse:
(Pars)
The sound of the light breeze that sifts through the leafy canopy above the Weald.
Parrsie:
(Par-see) One of Ahllies Lobot Cord
sisters. Selggies natural sister by a
different father. One year older and darker of skin. A philosopher, Parrsie has highly sexual nature,
she's intelligent, and a good problem solver. She's also a fine musician, being an excellent singer and
player of the wyndlyn. Named for the parse.
Patriarch:
Title of a wealthy landowner of the Uppsalian Empire.
Pedagogues:
(Ped-a-gog) The Pedagogues

Peg Poem:
Poems pegged to the walls in the main serving room of larger OutSider Inns. If you contributed, you
were given one free drink. As the evening continued, people would pull down their favorites and read
them aloud to the patrons. Those not read were discarded the next morning unless they were considered
exceptional, in which case they were left hanging for the next session.
Penswoods:
Place that holds the secret to Ahllies returning home.
Perber Wood:
(Purr-ber wood) Dark wood of
the Perber trees of western Erde. Age of the tree gives it it's color ranging from deep
black to light brown. Surface is smooth and maintains a high polish.
Perd: Large
spotted cat similar to the Leopard. Corrin Mountains
Physical Law:
The physical laws upon which the unvierse was built, like gravity and the law of thermodynamics. These
laws do not require belief to either exist or to exert their force. They are simply "what's so."
Piccato:
(Pick-ah-too) Common green
fern found in the southern Weald. Used in a mixture placed on village pathways to hide
the human smell of it's inhabitants.
Planters:
Members of the Vigroth who devise medicinal cures from plants and herbs. Often their
research finds other uses for plants, roots and mixtures.
Poled up: Anything set
on top of strong wooden poles.
Power Words: A grouping
of words that when spoke together either singularly or in a continous chant have the ability to bend
the Physical or Spiritual Laws of the Universe to the speaker's will.
Priarc:
(Pry-arc) A large brown weasel-type creature with an
extremely long tail that streams behind it when it runs. Central Weald.
Prime:
Socum in Vigroth. A relationship within a Cord between two individuals which involves constant mirroring. Within Lobot
Cord, Ahllie and Tarrilip were Prime, Coginna and Mongaussie were Prime, Billics and Selggie were Prime.
Lockksie and Parrsie were also Prime.
Proctor:
Appointed head official of a Rejoinder that represents it on the High Council in Uppsala.
Proining:
(Proy-nin) Large dog shaped mammal with extremely coarse
grayish hair. It's tail is covered with short pointy quills. Central to southern Weald.
Prophets:
A quasi-religious sect wearing brown hooded gorgets over dark tunics with a symbol of a red star
with a white heart in sided it. Their sect is the only one of its kind allowed in the Erde of the
OutSiders. They seem to be able to foretell the future.
Quacha: (Quach
-ah
) Vigroth word for child. Often used in referring to a child before it
is named. (Quachin - Children)
Quarrels:
Board game. Played similar to chess except pieces are named differently. Ahllie learned
the game from her mother who probably learned it from the Pedagogues. Game is widely played
throughout Erde.
Racchela:
(Ra-chell-ah)
Guardian of the North. One of the Spirit Mothers of Vigroth beliefs. Owatachhe is Lord of the
Plain of Formless Flame. The gift she granted to the Vigroth was the use of fire.

(Ran-nah-beth) Virtuous woman assisting Solloja.

Rathhcerie:
(Roth-cher-eye) Thelra village drummer. Priarc Cord.
Rebec: (Re-beck
) An ancient bowed usually 3-stringed musical
instrument with a pear-shaped body and slender neck.
Rejoinder:
Erde is physically divided into eight rejoinders. The ninth rejoinder is the entire union.
Rigga Sea:
(Ree-ga) Southern Sea of Erde.
Riggrathi:
(Rig-rath-eye) Natural enemies of the Vigroth who
live in the Eastern part of the Southern Weald. Vandals, they use captured enemies for sacrificing to their
gods.
Rirchet:
(Rear-chet) An eagle like bird of prey. Jalleli and
Gilrries Cord affiliation. Corrin Mountains.
Rock: Vigroth survival
game played by children. One or more boogers squat in front of a large rock in the forest and focus
on it. They watch the rock for hours until they detect movement. Winner depends on who
moves first, the kids or the rock. Teaches strong focus.

(Rue-hoe-a) Closest Vigroth village to Thelra.
Sammins:
(Sa-mins)
The great Lobot wolf. Old Gray. One of the Spirit Fathers of Vigroth beliefs and Spirit Guide of
the Lobot Cord. Sammins is Lord of the Astral Plain. The gift he granted to the Vigroth was Astral
travel. Guardian of the South, Sammins is also the teacher of the Physical and Spiritual Laws of the
Universe.

(Sak-if) Rirchet Cord brother of Jalleli and Gilrrie.
Lockksie's father.
Scratch:
OutSider slang for "money".
Secret Place: Found
somewhere deep within the ground, this is where the Vigroth people were first formed as spirits by Brother
Maker. "My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place. When I was

Selga: (Cell-ga) Port city located on the Selgen River south of
Uppsala.
Selgen River: (Cell-gan)
Named for its muddy waters. Flows east from
the Mountain divide above Uppsala then south past Selga to Rigga Sea.
Selggie:
(Cell-gee) Youngest of the Lobot Cord and Ahllie's Cord sister.
Younger natural sister of Parrsie. She has the best hearing of any Cord member. Excellent at flaugin'
because of her natural affinity to animals. Comedian and joker, she is full of excitement and laughter.
Her name literally means muddy feet. She liked to squish mud between her toes when she was a
booger.
Serga Bush: (Sir-ga)
Large bluish bush common to the northwestern section of the Weald.
Shakanu:
(Sha-kah-new) Vigroth stead where
Cord women sequester themselves during their monthly cycle or when giving birth.
Shammtu:
(Sham-too) Master Craftsman of Thelra who
crafts the Cord symbols given to children at their birth. Priarc Cord.
Share:
In Vigroth, Charsun. One who is without, or has no Prime. Ahllie became Share when Tarrilip
died. She was dependent on another Prime in her Cord to invite her into their DeepChat. The
word share was also used as a slang term reguarding the DeepChat relationship. To DeepChat with
someone was to share with them. The Vigroth thought of it in a very possive way, referring to their
relationship as, "Our share..."
Snap-Catch:
A very small box closed with a snap. Used by ladies in Uppsala to carry small amounts of makeup.
ShineDown:
Sunset.
Shiner: The
moon or the sun depending whether its day or night.
ShineRise:
Sunrise.
Sniff-em-out:
Vigroth survival game similar to Go-find except one child changes their smell in any way possible
and hides. The seeking children are blindfolded and must locate the hiding child by smell and
sound only.
Sogroth:
(Sog-roth)
The Sogroth live in a land called Havilah between the Pison and Gihon rivers. Relatives to the
Vigroth they cannibalize enemies during the winter when food is in short supply.
Solloja:
(Sol-o-ga) Elder of the virtuous women of the shakanu. Midwife
to the majority of those living in Thelra. Member of the Gort Cord.
Span: Vigroth
unit of measure. Distance between thumb tip and tip of the little finger. About 8-9 inches.
Spiritual Law:
The spiritual laws upon which the Universe was built, such as the law of giving and receiving. Like
their physical counterparts, these laws do not require belief to either exist or to exert their force.
They are simply "what's so.
Sprawll:
Four-a-side game played in a large field. Home consists of four trees within the Weald chosen on
opposite sides of the field. Participants camouflage themselves and ambush each other In
the meadow. Those captured are tied to one of the four trees. Freeing those on your team
is allowed. Object is to capture the other team's base.
Stanchion:
A thick upright pole used for support between the decks of a ship.
Stasha: Trance
inducing drug used by the Gatherers when taking their captives back to Uppsala.
Stead: Vigroth
hut built on poles about five feet off the ground.
Step Stake:
The Vigroth placed small pegs on the inside of the wall surrounding their villiages to facilitate going
over the wall. These pegs were placed diagonally from top to bottom about a foot apart and usually
located at places where travel away from the wall on the opposite side was less difficult.
One could hit the first stake at a run and be up and over the wall in seconds.
Summanari:
(Sue-man-are-eye) Nomadic enemies of the Vigroth who
range the Weald from just south of the Pison river to Kyrell Swamp and from the Corrin Mountains to the
Selgen river. The most dangerous of all the rival tribes.
Tarili:
(Ta-rill-eye) Large fat fish similiar to a sea bass that inhabits
fresh water streams, lakes and ponds of most of Erde.
Tarrilip:
(Ta-rill-ip) Ahllie's Cord brother and
leader of the Lobot Cord. Named for the Tarrili, greatest fighting game fish in the Weald.
Tarrilip and the Cord loved to fish together. He possessed excellent eyesight and was a
natural leader with a commanding aura.
Taylor:
An OutSider since 1945, Taylor had been part of the missing training flight lost on a mission from
Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. In Uppsala, he became a wealthy land owner and politician. He purchased Parrsie
at Uppsala's slave auction and fell in love with her.
Thelra:
(Thell-rah) Ahllies home nestled into
the deep Weald approximately five miles from the southern shoreline of Rigga Sea. Vigroth
villages have no trails that lead to them and are surrounded by thick poles, camouflaged
by their setting. Thelra was destroyed by Gatherers and rebuilt.
Telroth:
(Tell--roth)
Relatives of the Vigroth who live north of the Gihon river in a land called Kush. Kush continues
east, north of the Pardes river to the Selgen river. The Telroth also cannibalize their enemies
during the winter when food is in short supply.
Time n Times:
A time is a single year measured by the passing of the seasons. A Times is 1,000 Time.
To use the phrase 'Time n Times' would be like saying 'Many, many years ago.' Or it can refer
to the entire time of physical history which began after Brother Maker cracked Erde.
TimeIs:
Refers to the present, anything happening immediately.
TimeWas:
The use of TimeWas varies. TimeWas is a minute ago, a day ago, a year ago, thousands
of years ago. To the Vigroth, everything is now or TimeIs. Before now came TimeWas. The future,
that which is ahead of now is WillBe. Hence their saying, "TimeWas ain't no more. TimeWas is
Now n WillBe agen." Time began at the cracking of Erde. Before the cracking is always referred
to as "'Fore TimeWas" in other words, before time began.>
TimeWillBe:
This refers to the Future, or everything to come after TimeIs.
Tiywaldi:
(Tiy-wald-ee) The access pole leading
up to a Vigroth stead.
Totten Lane:
Street running west from the docks along the Selgen River in Uppsala. County Road crossed it near
the home of Jenanne, where Ahllie stayed after Tarrilip's death.
Trachhie:
(Tra-chee) Rirchet Cord sister of Jalleli and
Gilrrie.
Uhirla:
(U-hurl-a) Bunk girl at
the Brawny Billet, a sailor's inn located in Selga. Briggs' friend.
Ullumbrech:
(Ul-um-brech) In Vigroth lore, Ullumbrech, a member of the
Pakanno Vigroth village, defeated Fargthh in a fight causing Fargthh to curse the Vigroth people by
making the bite of the swamp snakes more deadly than to them than any other tribe or people.
Uppsala:
(Oop-sah-lah) Largest of
the City-States of Erde. It has long since defeated its
chief rival and established its rule over most of the civilized land of Erde. It has
a reputation of ill-treatment of neighboring peoples. Forced labor and slavery provide the
means for continual building projects and the lavish lifestyles of the wealthy. Ruled by
the High Council - representatives from the eight other major city-states of Erde and the
"Empty Chair."
Vigroth:
(Vig-roth) The loosely connected group of tribes of the
southern rainforest of the Weald. Usually settled into small villages of 30-90 people. Communication is
verbal and written both in their own language and the broken Anglich they pick up from the Pedagogues.
The Vigroth are very much a part of the forest they inhabit. They have an almost animal nature and are
extremely loyal to their people. Vigroth men and women are hunters and fishermen. Superior
trackers and stalkers, most possess keen eyesight and excellent quickness afoot. The
Vigroth use a simple barter system exchanging pelts, weapons - even fresh meat for needed
items. They understand the value of metal coinage to OutSiders and will accept these in
exchange for their wares. Vigroth bows are highly sought after as they are the finest
crafted and most accurate weapons produced in Erde.
Virkum:
(Vir-cum) Ceremonial center of Thelra.
Virtuous Woman:
A woman who aides others in a Vigroth shakanu. Virtuous is more a trait of industry than
morality.
Walk: A unit of measure. It
is the distance a grown man can walk comfortably in one day, about twenty miles.
Wammac:
(Wah-mic) Vigroth word for ore dug out of the Corrin
Mountains above Hummel that is used to make weapons of extreme sharpness. See
amock.
Weald:
(Wee-ald) Any forested area in Erde.
Weltch:
(Wellch)
A fat red bird that makes a noise similar to a jay. Common to all parts of the Weald.
Wyndlyn:
(Wind-lin) A viola sized stringed instrument with a thick, rounded handle.
Woflute:
(Woe-flute) A wood flute thick and round at one end and narrowing to a very slender
mouthpiece.
Woget:
(Woe-jet) Vigroth word for an inflamed pimple.
